Needed Tools

I previously did a blog post on the tools that I am using to learn Japanese and decided that it should have its own dedicated page.

First thing you will need is Anki.  Anki is an SRS (Spaced Repetition Software) designed to assist your learning by spacing out flashcards over certain time frames to help with memorization.

You can download Anki from http://www.ankisrs.net and if you sign up for an account, can even use it on the mobile phone when on the go, which I highly recommend.

I am using the RTK (Remembering the Kanji) deck created by Adam Shapiro at JapaneseLevelUp.com.  This website is a great resource for learning Japanese on your own.

There is a download link on that page to download the Anki deck.

I have the "8547 Japanese Sentences - from the 日本語文法辞典/Nihongo bunpou jiten (Japanese Grammar Dictionary)" deck from https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2032035930 that I will be using for sentence reps.

My books currently include:
  • Remembering the Kanji 1
  • Kanji and Kana Revised Edition
  • Random House Japanese-English/English-Japanese Dictionary
  • Japanese in Mangaland
For immersion, you can use music, audio books, or find movies that have Japanese audio and subtitles.
